history meme | ten moments ∙ the salem witch trials of 1692-1693

The Salem witch trials occurred in colonial Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft—the Devil’s magic—and 20 were executed by: hanging, being pressed to death under heavy stones, or torture. Hundreds of others faced accusations of witchcraft. Dozens languished in jail for months without trials. Then, almost as soon as it had begun, the hysteria that swept through Puritan Massachusetts ended. Eventually, the colony admitted the trials were a mistake and compensated the families of those convicted. Since then, the story of the trials has become synonymous with paranoia and injustice, and it continues to beguile the popular imagination more than 300 years later. [x]

1. Doot Toot
2. tiny fern
3. do NOT eat mushrooms you just find in the woods
4. broken heart broken trumpet
5. George Costanza is my hero

what to wear when…a bainikha. the bathhouse spirit breathes steam and leaves a gummy flood of sweat behind her. her feet stick to the floor and peel free with wet pops. humidity frizzes her hair. bathwater sloshes in her veins. her droopy face and waxy scar tissue make her seem like she is always one match shy of melting. men and women simmer in her saunas. their limbs glisten and their thoughts go honey-slow. the heat turns them docile. they do her bidding once their wills are dimmed. she is a depraved oracle tracing fortunes on her body. a warm kiss here, goosepimples there - she peddles promises of fate and pockets tributes of fatty soap and fir branches. she is a vicious trickster: she spies on bathing ladies; she sees babies born in her house as hers, and keeps them accordingly. she and olga hatched their plan in a tub like this, naked in every sense only for each other. the creature raked her claws through olga’s royal hair, twisting it in her fingers and giving wicked, spiteful tugs. her smoky belches suffocate the queen’s enemies. she boils them alive in tub-tureens and gnaws their cooked arms. when their revenge ended, she stood in the cinders of her home, wobbling on brittle, charcoaled bones.

Here follows Giorgio Vasari’s account of the above fresco detail:

Above the flying figure of Mercury he [Giovanni da Udine] fashioned a Priapus from a gourd and two eggplants for testicles… while nearby he painted a cluster of large figs, one of which, over-ripe and bursting open, is penetrated by the gourd.”
